Airlie Beach Access & Movement Plan

Whitsunday Regional Council received the Airlie Beach Access and Movement Plan on 12th November 2014.

The plan reviews the access, movement and signage in Airlie Beach, identifies key safety and accessibility concerns, addresses the on-going conflict about the location of bus stops and taxi ranks on the main street, addresses perceived parking shortages and looks at future requirements.

Since the Access and Movement Plan was released in May 2014, Council has undertaken extensive consultation with various stakeholders and State Government departments regarding access and movement within the Airlie Beach precinct.

The Access and Movement Plan, received by Council on 12 November 2014, presented two options to address current mobility issues within Airlie Beach.

Both options have been explored in detail by Council and in consultation with representatives from Department Transport and Main Roads; Department State Development Infrastructure and Planning; Whitsunday Rate Payers Association; Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce; Whitsunday Transit; Whitsunday Taxis; and Main Street traders.
As a result of this consultation the third preferred option has been prepared and approved by Council on 26th November 2014.

Following much debate and consultation with numerous stakeholders Council has decided on a preferred option for the location of bus stops and taxi ranks in Airlie Beach Main Street, which includes:
  • Locating local bus stops on the main st (Shute Harbour Rd) and Coconut Grove providing appropriate shelters where necessary;
  • Relocating the Taxi Rank to its central position on Main Street;
  • Restricting the accessibility of Main Street to certain heavy vehicles; and
  • Formalising pedestrian right of way within the Airlie Beach precinct.
A detailed road layout plan will be prepared for the precinct documenting the location, design and configuration of: bus stops; taxi rank; on-street and off street parking; service vehicle locations; pedestrian crossings; and pavement and line markings and traffic signage for each of the above item.
