Today, Whitsunday Regional Council resolved to receive the Regional and Resource Towns ActionPlan (RRTAP) – Implementation Report released by the Queensland Government in March.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jennifer Whitney said she is very pleased the Whitsundayregion has been identified as one of three new local government areas identified for furtherinvestigation and potential funding for new actions under RRTAP.
“Council also resolved to authorise the Chief Executive Officer to immediately action the RRTAPrecommendation to investigate opportunities to facilitate land development at Whitsunday CoastAirport including further development of master plan appraisal feasibility,” she said.
“The project investigating the opportunities to facilitate land development at the airport will benamed the Whitsunday Coast International Export Hub.
“The single most important piece of infrastructure to grow the Whitsunday region’s economy is the Whitsunday Coast Airport and developing this facility to its full potential.
“Growth at the airport will not only positively affect the region's tourism industry, but will also create further opportunities for importing and exporting.
“The announcement by the Queensland Government to investigate opportunities around the airport is consistent with Council’s current work with Economic Development Queensland on the potential Whitsunday Coast Airport Priority Development Area (PDA).
“A PDA for the Whitsunday Coast Airport will maximise the economic and developmentopportunities of this key precinct.
“It will make any potential future expansion of the terminal or runway at the airport much easier. It will also mean there is a potential in the future for the airport to be upgraded to a standard which would allow international flights.
"The Whitsunday region will benefit greatly from being included in the Queensland Government’s RRTAP and any additional research to facilitate land development and planning, particularly around the Whitsunday Coast Airport," she said.
