Council resolved today in the Ordinary Meeting to continue free car parking and ensure business continuity at Shute Harbour over the next year during the restoration of the facility.
With demolition starting this week on site, the damaged terminal buildings, jetties and pontoons will be removed so the Restoration works can begin.
Car parking will remain free while the facility is being restored, until the end of June 2019 or the end of the project, whichever is sooner.
Council has also committed to maintaining the operations of those businesses who currently use Shute Harbour as a base.
Project staging will ensure there is always a site available for businesses to operate, although businesses may be required to move locations at some point during the construction.
The Shute Harbour Restoration Project will deliver a brand new terminal building, jetties and pontoons, improve the seawall, raise the carpark level to current standards and see new fuel and water facilities installed.
Restoration works to terminal buildings, jetties and pontoons will be undertaken by Whitsunday Regional Council, with joint funding from the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
The demolition works are expected to be completed by mid-June, weather permitting.
During the demolition works there will be less parking available as sections of the lower carpark will be fenced off, however the upper carpark will remain open for any parking overflow. Motorists are encouraged to follow all signage on site during the works.
A detailed design for the Restoration project will be released to the public after mid-2018, with construction expected to begin shortly afterwards and be completed by mid-2019.
