Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said over the past few months Council hasbeen conducting extensive community consultation for the Whitsunday Regional Council 2020Corporate Plan and has received input from 562 community members.
Mayor Whitney said the community engagement process involved online and phone surveys, four community forums, two staff forums and a children’s picture drawing competition.
“The community engagement process found that the key priority for Whitsunday Regional Council over the next five years is responsible governance, including financial planning and community engagement,” she said.
“The Community Forums for the Whitsunday Regional Council 2020 Corporate Plan, held inProserpine, Collinsville, Bowen and Cannonvale were well attended by community members and consisted of very positive and productive discussions.
“All the attendees agreed our local agriculture, horticulture and tourism industries present theregion with enormous opportunities in the coming years.
“There were constructive discussions around how these industries can be developed, includingincreasing access to water supply and expanding export opportunities through the continueddevelopment of the Whitsunday Coast Airport and Abbot Point.
“The development of the Urannah dam and the energy corridor in the Bowen region were alsoidentified as priorities.
“The Whitsunday Regional Council 2020 Corporate Plan is an important piece of governance work which informs Council's directions and priorities over the next five years, and is also a way of measuring Council's progress in achieving key strategies.
“The extensive community consultation undertaken so far for the Whitsunday Regional Council2020 Corporate Plan is a significant step towards Council adopting a more consultative approach when developing major governance projects which drive the direction of Council,” she said.

The draft Corporate Plan is scheduled to be released for public consultation in May and a finalreport will be compiled and released following the conclusion of the public consultation period.
