Works will commence this week to seal a portion of Gloucester Avenue, a project co-funded by the State Government’s Roads to Recovery Program and Whitsunday Regional Council.
The works are a continuation from the 2017/18 restoration program and will seal 1.3km of the road followed by an additional 1.3km of gravel re-sheeting and culvert repairs.
Mayor Willcox said that the upgrade works will ensure residents and tourists have safer access to the beautiful beaches and resorts in the Hydeaway Bay area.
“Traffic statistics show the traffic volume to be 376 vehicles per day with only 10% of that number being heavy vehicles,” he said.
“This is a fairly high statistic for an unsealed road with many tourists utilising the road to visit the resorts and beaches as well as locals travelling to and from their residences.
“The sections of road before and after the seal are not currently funded however Council will seek funding in future funding rounds.”
The project will be undertaken in three stages due to the nature of the works and to minimise disruption.
The schedule is as follows:
• Stage 1 - Thursday 26th July – the first 840m will receive first coat• Stage 2 - Wednesday 1st August – the remaining 410m will receive first coat• Stage 3 - 22nd August - The final coat will be applied to the complete 1.3km of sealed road. This will be undertaken two weeks after Stage 2 is completed to allow the first coat to cure.
