Whitsunday Regional Council today endorsed the Townsville Correctional Centre's BowenWomen's Work Camp to help prepare for the Bowen River Rodeo & Camp Draft 6-8th June 2014.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the Bowen Women’s Work Camp has been involved with manyimprovements to the Bowen region since it was established in 2007.
“The low-security prisoners in the camp are a valuable source of labour to help undertake projects or community work that would otherwise not be completed,” she said.
“It is great to see that their work can help the Collinsville community in providing assistance inpreparing for the Bowen River Rodeo and Camp Draft, taking place in Collinsville over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
“The women will help prepare the facilities for the rodeo and camp draft so they are in top condition prior to the long weekend.
“Work will include cleaning amenities, mowing, painting and conducting general maintenance onthe facilities at the Bowen River Rodeo grounds.
“The Bowen Women’s Work Camp has also recently been doing an excellent job in helpingclean-up on farms in the Bowen area following Cyclone Ita.
“The program enables the low-security prisoners to develop work and life skills that may increase their chances of successful re-integration into the community upon release.
“It also encourages low-security prisoners to develop a work ethic by engaging them in regularwork practices and encouraging self responsibility,” she said.
