Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said she is very pleased Council wassuccessful in gaining $110,000 of funding from the State Government for a $120,000 AutomaticWeather Station (AWS) at Bowen Aerodrome.
“The new AWS will provide the Whitsunday Disaster Management Group and the Bowencommunity with frequent, automatically updated, weather data including wind speed and direction, temperatures, humidity and rainfall amounts near the Bowen township.
“This constantly updated local data will be invaluable during a localised flash flooding event suchas was experienced in Bowen through Cyclone Ita, 13 April 2014 and on 23 November 2013.
“An AWS will also complement existing flood mitigation measures Council is currently conducting.
“The weather data will be recorded in real time by the new AWS and provided to the Bureau ofMeteorology (BoM).
“This new station will be installed in consultation with the BoM, and Council is currently workingwith BoM to ensure the information from the new weather station will be easily accessible byanyone in the community through the BoM website.
“Council will also provide $10,000 in kind support for the AWS and project manage the installation of the equipment.
“Council is very thankful for the State Government funding for this project which will providesignificantly better and faster data than is currently available for the community and theWhitsunday Disaster Management Group which will assist in the preparation, recovery andcommunity resilience in future flood events,” she said.
