Whitsunday Regional Council will be encouraging students to consider a career in local
government at the Careers Expo to be held in Proserpine on Tuesday 12 August.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the Careers Expo was an opportunity for employers and tertiary
institutions to showcase the career opportunities and study options available to secondary
students.
“One of the greatest misconceptions about local government is the lack of understanding about the broad range of career opportunities,” she said.
“A number of people only associate Council with emptying rubbish bins and issuing rate notices
but there are varied career paths you can take when working in local government.
“There are also a number of specialised areas that require tertiary study including engineering,
town planning, building certification, mapping, and environmental health.
“Council from time to time offers apprenticeships across a number of departments, and
encourages staff progression within the organisation.”
The Careers Expo provides an opportunity for students, who are considering a career in local
government, to speak to one of Council’s Human Resources Advisors to ensure they are on the
right career path to achieving their goals.
