Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to approve the application by Fynbat Pty Ltd toextract sand from the Don River.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the extraction site lies in a meander of the Don River, South West ofMillers Lane and will focus on a large sand deposit which is adversely affecting the hydrauliccharacteristics of the Don River when it is flowing.
“Through negotiations with the Queensland Government and the Don River Trust it was agreedthat the extraction of sand deposits would positively improve the flow of the Don River,” she said.
“This will be particularly beneficial in times of high rainfall when the river has been known to riseextremely quickly and sand deposits can exacerbate flooding issues.
“The sand extraction will remove up to 50,000 cubic metres per annum, with the activities takingplace during the dry season, when water levels in the Don River are low enough to allow theworks.
“We expect the work to begin immediately, so that by the upcoming wet season local residents will benefit from the sand extraction works,” she said.
The activities will be conducted between 6am-6pm Monday to Friday during the dry season.
