Whitsunday Regional Council today adopted a new policy which will help stamp out water meter
tampering and the potential theft of water from the Public Water Supply system.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the new “Interference with Water Providers Infrastructure Policy” deals with the interference of council Water meters and their connection and disconnection from the service providers’ infrastructure.
“This new policy has been developed following 11 recent investigations by Council where it has
been identified that water meters and associated pipework have deliberately been interfered with
to avoid payment for water,” she said.
“These acts only end up costing other ratepayers more, as they end up having to cover the costs
of those accessing water unlawfully. It’s not fair for the majority of ratepayers who do the right
thing.
“Most people may not be aware that water meters and pipes are Council property and tampering or interfering with them can attract stiff penalties.
“The 11 current investigations may lead to prosecution which can result in fines up to $113,500.
“The new policy outlines clear guidelines for Council officer who identify suspected tampering of
water meters, how to report the damage and investigate it appropriately.
“At the end of the day we want to stop people unlawfully accessing water that the rest of the
regions ratepayers will have to pick up the tab for,” she said.
