Last week, Whitsunday Regional Council received the Don River Flood Risk and Mitigation Study; Stage 1 – Flood Risk Assessment (AECOM, September 2014) and unanimously resolved to release it to the public.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said last year Council commissioned AECOM to undertake the study looking at the flood risk posed by the Don River and investigate potential mitigation options to help improve future flood resilience for the Bowen community.
“The Queensland Government provided 40% of the funding for the study with Council providing the remainder,” she said.
“Stage 1 of the Don River Flood Risk and Mitigation Study outlines the flood risks in detail, withStage 2 presenting possible approaches to mitigating flooding.
“Council also resolved to provide the Don River Improvement Trust with Stage 1 of study to provide feedback to Council.
“A meeting with Council and AECOM will also be arranged to discuss the findings of the study,”she said.
Stage 2 of the study will focus more on flood mitigation techniques and is due to be complete in the next couple of months.
