Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney said congratulations must go to theWhitsunday State Emergency Service (SES) Unit and the Bowen SES Unit who wererecognised last week by the Queensland Government with state-wide Emergency Services awards.
“The Whitsunday SES Unit were recognised for their efforts in assisting to rescue people trapped in floodwater during Tropical Cyclone Ita in April and last week received the Central Regional Operational Response of the Year award,” she said.
“The Whitsunday SES unit were called to assist with rescuing a group of adults and childrentrapped in rising waters and successfully guided a rescue helicopter to winch them to safety.
“I remember the evening of the event of Cyclone Ita and the flood waters were rising very quicklyisolating people and trapping them, the unit should be commended for their fantastic effort actingso swiftly to rescue these people.
“The Bowen SES Group was also awarded Regional Group of the Year for their work throughoutthe last wet season.
“Over the last year, the Bowen SES Group has responded to numerous requests for help duringthree separate severe weather and cyclone events which struck the Bowen region.
“The Bowen SES Group is dedicated and devoted to the Bowen community and are verydeserving of this award.
“The whole Whitsunday region is fortunate to have such professional, committed and hardworking SES units helping to keep them safe during severe weather events, congratulations to both units.
