Whitsunday Regional Council today approved an application for a Community Assistance Grant of$1,070 for Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Whitsunday.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the grant will reimburse the cost of a new 20m x 8mm anchoring ropeand chain management to suit a Muir Cougar Winch.
“This new equipment is critical to replace 10 year old equipment nearing the end of its life,” shesaid
“Anchors and related equipment are mandatory by law to be carried on vessels and without thisreplacement equipment the rescue boat (VMR-1) would not be allowed to leave port.
“The entire community will benefit from the provision of this equipment as without rescue boat(VMR-1) there would be no means of attending to vessels in distress.
“VMR Whitsunday does a fantastic job keeping local boaties safe in our waters, receiving anaverage of two calls per week from vessels in distress that need assistance,” she said.
The organisation submitted an application out–of–round, however, due to the nature ofthe equipment and given the broader safety benefits to the broader community, it has beenassessed as appropriate to consider out-of-round.
