Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to request the Queensland Government reallocateCouncil’s youth services funding to the Bowen and Whitsunday PCYC’s to deliver youth serviceswithin the Whitsunday region.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said Council believes youth services are more appropriately provided byspecialist community groups and organisations in the local area with qualified social workers andsufficient resources to tackle the complex issues affecting today’s youth.
“Council will ensure the funding for these services remains in the Whitsunday region and Councilwill help deliver the Queensland Government funding for these initiatives to the local communitygroups,” she said.
“Council is also proposing the Proserpine YouthSpace relocate to the Proserpine CommunityCentre at 36 Gardenia Street, Proserpine.
“Council believes these arrangements will deliver better youth services for our regions youngpeople and will be a better use of the funding available to deliver these services.”
Council will now write to the Queensland Government Minister of Communities, Child Safety andDisability Services requesting that funding reallocation.
Council will also be writing to YouthSpace and Proserpine Community Centre Association Inc.requesting the relocation of YouthSpace to the Proserpine Community Centre and invite them tomeet formally to discuss the option.
