Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney today officially opened the revitalised AirlieBeach Main Street.
Mayor Whitney said despite the new street being open for more than a year it has never beenofficially opened and today’s opening is a day to celebrate the boost to the local economy therevitalised Main Street has breathed into Airlie Beach over the last year.
“It is a pleasure to officially open the new Main Street with the Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen and the State Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan,” Mayor Whitney said.
“I think everyone will agree that the Main Street has never looked better and the revitalisationproject has been a real boost for local businesses and tourism operators in Airlie Beach.
“Since the practical completion of the Main Street on 14th September last year businesses alongthe main street have reported a boost in trading, with many new businesses opening.
“On top of bumper tourism numbers this year a new mood of optimism is being felt in Airlie Beach.
“I think the final result of our beautiful new Main Street alleviates some of the pain local businesses felt during the 18 months of construction.
“Today we see the Main Street buzzing with tourists, backpackers and locals all contributing to the local economy,” she said.
Mayor Whitney said construction started on the $22.9 million revitalisation project in February2012.
“During the 18 month life term of the project hundreds of local jobs were created throughconstruction, design, provision of materials and implementation,” she said.
The total cost of the design, construction and project management was $22.9 million andWhitsunday Regional Council would like to thank the Queensland Government and FederalGovernment for their funding contribution which made this road upgrade a reality.
The Queensland Government contributed $8 million and the Federal Government contributed $5million.
