The winner and runner-up of Whitsunday Regional Council’s Proserpine Christmas decorationcompetition will be announced at 6.30pm on Friday 19th December at the Proserpine RotaryChristmas Fair.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the judging panel, which consists of Member for Whitsunday JasonCostigan, President of the Proserpine Chamber of Commerce Chris Patrick and the WhitsundayCoast Guardian, will announce the winners on the trailer in the middle of Main Street.
“A cash first prize of $500 will be awarded to the best decorated business with a runner-up prize of $250,” she said.
“The competition has been a great incentive for local businesses to get involved in and spreadsome Christmas cheer around Proserpine and we congratulate all the local businesses who have taken part.
“There has been an extra Christmas buzz up and down the Main Street this year and I believe the Christmas decoration competition has helped spread the festive spirit throughout Proserpine.
“Proserpine Main Street is significantly limited in what Christmas decorations can be erected due to Council not owning control of the main street.
“Unlike the main streets in Airlie Beach, Bowen and Collinsville, Council does not own Proserpine Main Street meaning we do not have authority to put up Christmas lights or decorations in the street.
“This has meant in previous years that Proserpine has missed out on celebrating the Christmasspirit.
“Council sought to rectify this situation this year by helping to spread the Christmas cheer, byrunning a Christmas decoration competition with cash prizes for businesses in the Main Street.
“The competition is open to all businesses in Proserpine, not just those on the Main Street, tospread the cheer throughout the town,” she said.
