Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to award $8,500 in Community Assistance Grants tocontribute towards two local community projects.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said Council will donate $3,500 as a major events grant to Zonta Club ofWhitsundays and $5,000 as a project grant to Operation Pilgrimage Group.
“The $3,500 grant will go towards the Zonta Club of the Whitsundays district conference to be held over three days from Friday October 9 – Sunday October 11 2015 at the Coral Sea resort,” she said.
“The conference theme is “Empowering Women through Conviction, Commitment and Courage”and will bring up to 150 delegates to a series of events over the three days,” she said.
Mayor Whitney said the Operation Pilgrimage Group are all ex-servicemen who have have beenplanning, undertaking and completing projects in the national interest since 1993.
“The $5,000 grant will go towards the groups aim to plan, undertake, erect and dedicate a suitable memorial to recognize the loss of life of five young officers aboard the training whaler from HMAS Sydney in 1963 off the Whitsunday coast.
“The aim of the project is to find a suitable place for a Memorial Anchor from the decommissioned HMAS Sydney as permanent reminder of the tragedy in the region.
“The memorial will pay tribute to every service member of the Defence Forces who have paid the price of their service by active training in particular “The Missing Midshipmen of ‘63”.”
Both organisations submitted applications out–of–round, however, due to the nature of theirprojects and given the benefits to the broader community and tourists, it has been assessed asappropriate to consider them out-of-round. Both applications meet all of the key criteria and weretherefore approved.
