Whitsunday Disaster Management Group is asking residents of the Whitsunday region to thinkabout how they would cope without power for up to a week following a natural disaster.
Whitsunday Disaster Management Group Chair and Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor JennyWhitney said this is likely to be the reality if a cyclone strikes the Whitsunday region and is asobering reminder with two months left of this year’s cyclone season.
“Category 5 Cyclone Marcia which recently hit Yeppoon and Rockhampton caused extendedpower outages to over 60,000 electricity customers,” she said.
“Over 20,000 customers were still without power six days after Cyclone Marcia crossed the coast, in a week where average temperatures were above 35 degrees.
“Residents of the Whitsunday region who were around during Cyclone Ului in March 2010 willremember that this Category 3 system caused widespread power outages of around 3 days andover 1 week in some areas.
“Residents who do not own a generator are asked to consider purchasing one, which would enable a temporary power supply to their home until the mains power is restored.
“Based on previous history, once the Whitsunday region experiences a disaster event it would be very hard to purchase or get your hands on a generator.
“Although generators are a modest investment, they are an excellent step towards advancedcyclone preparedness.
“A changeover switch can be installed into dwellings by a licensed electrician to allow generatorsto be safely connected directly into the dwelling.
“Residents are also reminded to ensure you have adequate petrol to run the generator and to fillup your car before an event hits, people in Yeppoon and Rockhampton were queuing for up tothree hours for petrol following Cyclone Marcia.
“Ensuring you have an appropriate generator setup at your home will significantly increase you and your families comfort and ability to cope following a disaster event.
“The more people in the community who are self-sufficient and have generators also means lessstress on emergency services during the recovery phase, allowing the community to get back onits feet sooner,” she said.
