Mayor Jenny Whitney said she is pleased that Whitsunday Regional Council is again in a financial position where apprenticeships can be offered to local young people.
“Council and TORGAS are advertising to fill six apprenticeship positions in 2015 which are a great opportunity for local young people to get the training, skills and experienced required to become a qualified tradesperson,” she said.
“By offering these opportunities in the community Council is helping to alleviate localunemployment especially in the youth sector.”
The positions being advertised are:
• Mechanic Apprenticeship in Bowen• Mechanic Apprenticeship in Proserpine• Plumbing Apprenticeship in Bowen• Plumbing Apprenticeship in Proserpine• Fitting and Turning Apprenticeship in Bowen• Electrical Apprenticeship in Bowen
Mayor Whitney said these positions will fill the vacant apprenticeship positions that are or willbecome vacant by 30 June 2015.
“Apprenticeship positions which become vacant from 1 July 2015 will be part of the 2016 intake,”she said.
“Moving forward the intakes will occur in January or February each year.
“Last month, Council announced TORGAS Inc had been awarded the supply contract for theprovision of Councils apprenticeship positions through a Group Training Organisation.
“Council previously scaled back its apprenticeship program due to Council’s financial position and the fact that the previous State Government removed funding for the traineeship program, which accounted for approximately 50% of the budgeted funds.
“We are pleased to be able to offer this training and experience to our young people to help offercareer paths in the local community.
“Council also looks forward to seeing the new State Government’s commitment to reinstatingfunding for trainee and apprentice places,” she said
