Whitsunday Regional Council and the Mimosa Pigra Working Group are urging local residents and landholders to be vigilant in the fight against the Class 1 declared weed.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said the Mimosa Pigra Working Group was originally formed to provide strategic advice in controlling the Class 1 declared weed at Peter Faust Dam.
“In February 2001 the first infestation in Australia, outside the Northern Territory, of approximately 100 plants of Mimosa pigra was found at Peter Faust Dam,” she said.
Reef Catchment Project Officer Iona Flett said Mimosa pigra has the potential to have a major environmental, economic and social impact on the coastal floodplains of the Proserpine River, where it could form dense, almost monospecific stands.
“Proserpine’s canefields, cattle-grazing areas and wetlands of conservation significance could be at risk if this weed escapes from the control area,” she said.
“The Mimosa Pigra Working Group has a number of stakeholders representing many local industry groups which may be impacted if the weed escapes the dam.
“Stakeholders include Biosecurity Queensland, Canegrowers Proserpine, Proserpine Station, Reef Catchments, Sunwater and Whitsunday Regional Council.”
The Mimosa Pigra plant has green leaves, feathery and fern-like, with the central leaf stalk being prickly and 20-25cm long. Each leaf contains up to 16 opposite segments, each segment 5cm long and divided into pairs of leaflets which fold up at nightfall or when touched. The flowers are round, fluffy, pink or mauve balls 1- 2cm across.
