Last Council meeting, the Whitsunday Regional Council resolved to commence the communityconsultation stage for the New Draft Whitsunday Regional Council Planning Scheme.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said that the commencement of the public consultation program on 21August 2015 represents the beginning of Stage 3 in the process of preparing the new PlanningScheme.
“A new modern planning scheme for the whole region is needed to address a number of growthfactors in the Whitsunday region including increases in population, growth in the tourism industry, international investment, proposed Port of Abbot Point expansion and development of the Whitsunday Coast Airport to international status.”
“Since the local government amalgamations in 2008, Council has operated with two planningschemes to manage land use planning, development and infrastructure delivery for the region;the Bowen Shire Planning Scheme 2006 and Whitsunday Shire Planning Scheme 2009.”
“Implementation of a single planning scheme for the whole region will streamline developmentapprovals and address out of date provisions in the existing two schemes.”
“The community consultation program associated with the planning scheme allows the entireWhitsunday region to participate in the planning process with all results and actions in response to public consultation to be brought before council for noting.”
“Council will be conducting face-to-face consultation with the community at local markets andlibraries and engaging with the public after business hours in a relaxed setting,” Mayor Whitneysaid.
Whitsunday Regional Council is seeking input from residents to ensure that any community issues are recognised and incorporated into project planning and considered in the development of the draft planning scheme.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said at the completion of this consultation program all submissions will beappropriately considered and responded to, assisting in the finalisation of the draft planningscheme.
