Whitsunday Regional Council has today welcomed a visit from the Honourable Mark Bailey MP,Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports to inspect the Whisper Bay (VMR) Breakwater andboat ramp and formally announce a further $2 million funding.
The former State Government previously committed $1million and the current State Governmenthave added a further $2 million to the prior commitment to take the total funding up to $3 million.Mayor Jenny Whitney met with Minister Bailey along with Councillors and officers involved in theplanning stages of the project.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said Council is delighted with Minister Bailey’s announcement confirming a further $2 million in funding from State Government for the upgrade of the Whisper Bay boatbreakwater and boat ramp.
“The Whisper Bay boat ramp and breakwater project has been a long time in the making and wethank the State Government for their commitment; we are finally able to deliver this importantpublic facility to our passionate boating community,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Council is now in a position to move quickly on the project with State Agencies Referral Agency(SARA) issuing the tidal works permit on the 24th June,” she said.
“Tenders for the project construction were called in three parts for haulage of rock; placement ofrock (breakwater construction) and boat ramps works,
“Successful tenderers have been notified and construction will commence in early September,
“We will be delivering the Whitsunday community and our rescue services a safe and accessibleboat ramp facility by Christmas; this is exciting news for our region.”
Mayor Jenny Whitney said that the newly established project control committee formed to oversee the project has already met twice to discuss the upgrade.
“The project control committee discussed project planning, key dates and the overall delivery of the works. This committee will meet throughout the life of the upgrade to ensure maximum efficiency in delivering this project,”
“We once again thank the Queensland Government for the funding promise to help deliver thisessential upgrade.”
Overall the works include development of a breakwater, a floating walkway and a pontoon, as well as widening of the current ramp.
