Two local students were presented with the Wingate Properties Sport Encouragement BursaryAward by Mayor Jenny Whitney, in recognition of their outstanding sporting achievements and to assist them in fulfilling their dreams to one day represent Australia.
Proserpine High School student Katie Campbell and Whitsunday Christian College student LiamTomas were presented with the bursaries at a reception held at the Whitsunday Regional Council Proserpine chambers.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said that the number and quality of applicants for the 2015 WingateProperties Sport Encouragement Bursary Awards program was a testament to the profile of sport across the region.
“Applicants are selected based on their desire to achieve in their particular sport and recipientsare awarded with a cheque for $650 a medal and an NQSF jacket,
“The money from the bursaries assists these students to attend training camps and to compete in state and national tournaments and championships,” Mayor Whitney said.
Mayor Jenny Whitney commended both students for their exceptional contribution to their sportand for their achievements beyond the region.
“Being both a School Captain & Sports House Captain, Katie was selected for this Award due to her outstanding sporting prowess in athletics, having competed at both regional and national levels, as well as her academic record,” Mayor Whitney said.
“In the last two years Liam has had several successive wins at the Qld Kyokushin Karate championships, both in full-contact and non-contact modes and most recently has been awarded the Karate Kata winner 11/12 division at the 2015 Queensland Kyokushin Karate champions, an outstanding achievement,”
“On behalf of the Whitsunday Regional Council I would like to thank the North Queensland Sporting Foundation for the work that they do in promoting sports through the Wingate Properties Sport Encouragement Bursaries,” Mayor Whitney said.
