Whitsunday Regional Council is showing its support for ending sexual violence in our communities
by promoting Sexual Violence Awareness Month (SVAM) throughout October.
Mayor Jenny Whitney said numerous Council vehicles are displaying a teal ribbon which is the
internationally recognised colour symbolising sexual violence awareness.
“This is a very serious issue and unfortunately is quite a common form of assault in our community that should not be tolerated,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Many of us are not aware or perhaps turn a blind eye when confronted with an issue such as
sexual violence,
“As a community, we can help people who are exposed to this type of abuse by raising community awareness, upholding a clear message that it is not acceptable and also promoting the various support options available to people in need,
“There are both local and state services that can provide free and confidential counselling, support and medical care,
“Council is pleased to participate in this campaign and help support the end of sexual violence.”
Support services are available by ringing Whitsunday Crisis and Counselling on 4946 2999, the
Sexual Assault Line on 1800 010 120 or the Mackay Sexual Health and Sexual Assault Service on 4968 3919.
