The Whitsunday Coast Airport’s positioning as an Export Hub has taken a giant step forward with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Hong Kong for the development of Cold Store facilities on-site at the airport.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the agreement would enable AUD$5 million worth of seafood exports from the Whitsunday region to Hong Kong over a two year period.
“Our airport continues to be a much sought-after opportunity for development and growth, be it through export, general aviation, international services or transport and logistic services,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Our Chief Executive Officer, who is currently dedicated full time to Council’s Airport project, recently travelled to Hong Kong to finalise the Memorandum of Understanding and meet with inbound tour wholesalers,” she said.
“These discussions were very successful in preparing the way forward for an international charter program direct to our airport from Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as discussing further export opportunities via a proposed food processing facility south of Bowen with the E-Cheng group.
“The Airport’s Masterplan and Feasibility Study demonstrated the numerous opportunities available and we’re now seeing the initial stages of conversion.
“The Federal and State Governments’ commitment to North Australia and its growth is firmly embedded through improving trade links; this will be achieved through ensuring access and viability of services of which our Council is delivering upon to provide jobs and future economic growth.”
Council is currently working through the regulatory requirements in delivering an international charter program to the Whitsunday region focusing on the New Zealand and North East Asian markets.
