The Whitsunday Coast Airport International Export Hub project has been highlighted at the North Queensland Economic Summit in Cairns, hosted by the Queensland Government and the North Australian Investment Forum in Darwin hosted by the Federal Government.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the airport was now recognised as a strategically important project across all three tiers of government.
“The potential of the Whitsunday Coast Airport has been recognised at the highest levels of the State and Federal Governments, and to have our Chief Executive Officer, who is dedicated full time to the project, invited to present and showcase the opportunities available around the airport has been a fantastic opportunity,” Mayor Whitney said.
“This builds upon the recent initial trade Memorandum of Understanding signed in Hong Kong to see AUD$5 million worth of seafood exported from our region and the development of cold store facilities at the Whitsunday Coast Airport,” she said.
“Developments such as these will provide new options and supply chain opportunities for our primary producers to take advantage of as part of the recently signed free trade agreements.Mayor Whitney said the Whitsunday Region’s unique position at the nexus of North and Central Queensland meant that the region is perfectly placed to be significant partner for the growth and development of North Australia.
“While our airport has been the main focus at the summits, Council has ensured the entire region has been showcased with advocacy for significant infrastructure development in water, energy, transport and logistics, as per our Corporate Plan Whitsunday 2020,” Mayor Whitney said.
“Our continued advocacy efforts will positively affect our tourism and agriculture sectors to take advantage of the opportunities that lie before us,” she said.
The conclusion of the North Australian Investment Forum in Darwin today is the culmination of significant co-ordination across all levels of government in advocating for and showcasing Council’s Whitsunday Coast Airport International Export Hub project at investor events as the project moves into its final stages.
