Whitsunday Regional Council has welcomed the Queensland Government’s decision toapprove three mining leases for the $21.7 billion Carmichael Coal Mine and Rail Project in theGalilee Basin.
Mayor Andrew Willcox joined Premier Annastascia Palaszczuk and Dr Anthony Lynham, theMinister for State Development, in Mackay yesterday to announce the approval of the threeleases.
“Council is strongly committed to supporting the continued development of the Port of AbbotPoint and the Abbot Point State Development Area, and I was very pleased to join PremierPalaszczuk and Dr Lynham yesterday for this important announcement,” Cr Willcox said.
“The Carmichael project will provide a much-needed boost to our local economy and isexpected to generate enormous job growth, so this is certainly good news for the WhitsundayRegion,” he said.
“Adani has estimated the project will generate more than 5,000 jobs at the peak of theconstruction stage, with a further 4,500 jobs expected to be created during the operation of theproject.”
Mayor Willcox congratulated the Queensland Government for imposing stringent conditionsaimed at protecting the local environment and iconic Great Barrier Reef.
“Our local tourism industry is dependent on the Great Barrier Reef being protected, and theQueensland Government has heard that message loud and clear, imposing 140 conditions toprotect local flora and fauna, groundwater and surface water resources, and a further 99conditions to the project’s rail and port components,” he said.
