Whitsunday Regional Council will support the 2016/17 Steer North Ride by engaging with local community groups and schools to assist with hosting participants during the 4000 kilometre cycling challenge.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said Council was proud to be supporting the Steer North Ride, a cycling journey from Melbourne to Cairns aimed at empowering young adults to live active and healthy lives.
“It’s no secret that Australia is facing an obesity epidemic, with 63 per cent of Australian adults being overweight and $50 billion a year being spent on obesity, so it’s fantastic that Council is able to support an initiative like the Steer North Ride,” Cr Willcox said.
“We’re expecting 35 cyclists to participate in the upcoming challenge, and they’ll be travelling through both Proserpine and Bowen on their way to Cairns,” he said.
“Over the coming months, Council will be reaching out to local schools and organisations to request that they get involved and accommodate some of the participants for the time they’ll be in our region.”
The participants are expected to travel through the Whitsunday Region from 9 – 11 January 2017.
