Barry Omundson has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Whitsunday Regional Council at a special meeting held this morning at the Council Chambers in Bowen.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said that Mr Omundson, who has been acting in the role since September 2015, was appointed following an extensive recruitment process that attracted a very strong and capable list of candidates from across Australia.
“Council has now completed a rigorous recruitment process to find the best person to lead our organisation forward, and I was delighted that Barry applied for the ongoing position after assuming the role on an interim basis last year,” Cr Willcox said.
“We attracted a strong field of candidates from which to choose, and Barry ticked all the right boxes in terms of experience, knowledge and vision,” he said.
“Having served in senior leadership roles in both local government and the private sector, Barry has demonstrated his ability to effectively manage large, complex teams and build cooperative relationships across government, industry, business and community.
“In his eight months as Acting CEO, Barry has already made a strong contribution to Council and has made significant progress in driving positive cultural change within the organisation.
“Along with my team of Councillors, I look forward to working with Barry over the next term of Council to deliver open and transparent local government for the Whitsunday Region and achieve great results for our community.”
Mr Omundson said he was looking forward to continuing to work with the Mayor, Councillors, staff and community in his new role as permanent CEO.
“Council faces enormous opportunities and has a bright future ahead, and I’m proud to be leading such a professional and hard-working group of staff as we work towards implementing the Mayor’s and Councillors’ vision for a strong, prosperous and inclusive Whitsunday Region,” he said.
Mr Omundson is a qualified engineer and holds a Master of Business Administration from Southern Cross University.
His previous roles include Chief Executive Officer at Mackay Regional Council, Director of Infrastructure at Maranoa Regional Council and Executive Manager for Operations at Cradle Mountain Water.
