Whitsunday Regional Council today held a special morning tea in honour of David Nicholas OAM who is about to commence his Paralympic journey, representing Australia in a range of cycling events.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said that David is employed by Council as an Information Technology (IT) Support Officer and on behalf of the staff and councillors, he wished David the best of luck for a successful cycling campaign in Rio.
“I’m sure David knows how proud we are of his achievements and to be a member of the Australian Cycling Team for a second time is an absolutely incredible achievement in itself,” Cr Willcox said.
“David puts in many hours of training and I’m sure he knows how proud his friends and colleagues are of him; he’s really doing the Whitsunday Region proud.”
David Nicholas OAM has said he is very honoured to be able to once again represent his country at the Paralympics and is appreciative of the support received so far.
“I would like to thank my work mates, everyone on social media and the community for their support of the last couple of weeks, it has been great.”
David’s event schedule at the 2016 Rio Paralympics includes:
Track9th September 3km Individual Pursuit 10th September 1km Time Trial
Road 14th September 30km Time Trial16th September 70km Road Race
David will fly to Sydney on Thursday to meet his cycling team before flying to Italy for a 2.5 week pre-staging camp ahead of the 2016 Rio Paralympics which commences on 7 September with the opening ceremony.
