Last week, Whitsunday Regional Council confirmed the establishment of an Industry ReferenceGroup (IRG) for current and ongoing work associated with the preparation of the new Whitsunday Regional Council Planning Scheme.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the establishment of an industry reference group is a significant step towards Council adopting a more consultative approach to local town planning.
“The purpose of the IRG is to draw on the knowledge and experience of representatives from the local building, construction and business industry,” Mayor Whitney said.
“We are calling for nominations from members of key local industries including building, development, tourism, agriculture, mining and professional services.
“As a technical reference group it is intended the IRG will be asked to review and provide input on specific planning scheme drafting matters and draft material including but not limited to; strategic framework, zones, overlays and associated codes.
“As part of participating in the IRG, Council will look to its members to participate in regularmeetings and provide ongoing input into the review of draft policy material associated with the new planning scheme.
“Members will be provided with sensitive information and draft planning policy, so will be required to enter into a confidentiality agreement with Council
“The IRG will not replace any form of general community consultation intended to be carried out for the new planning scheme.
“Rather, is seeking early input from key industry stakeholders prior to completing a draft planning scheme.
“Full community consultation will still be carried out on the new draft planning scheme in2014/2015,” she said.
