Planning has begun on a new Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) fire station to bebuilt in Proserpine, boosting QFES’ delivery of critical fire and rescue services to localcommunities.
Whitsunday Regional Council Deputy Mayor John Collins was at the Palaszczuk Government’sCommunity Cabinet meeting in Proserpine yesterday when it was confirmed that planning hadstarted on a $2.4 million replacement for Proserpine’s aging station.
The project will be funded under the Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program through the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.
Cr Collins said the new Proserpine Fire Station would provide local firefighters with a modern and functional base so they can continue to deliver the best service for their community.
“The site for the new station has been carefully selected away from the busy centre of town, giving firefighters better access and more space for training and equipment storage.
“More importantly the State Government has indicated to us their intent to focus on utilising localcontractors.
“They will prioritise the use of sub-contractors, with preference for local and increase how theyengage with local suppliers & businesses in terms of awareness & training,” Cr Collins said.
Fire and Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne said the new stations would better meet QFES’growing operational requirements in these areas.
“The existing stations in these locations have served their communities well for decades but have been outgrown by their crews and the community,” Minister Byrne said.
The design stage of both projects is well underway, with tenders for construction expected to becalled in next month and construction work to begin early 2017.
