Council celebrates Australia Day with regional events

Whitsunday Regional Council is gearing up for another fun filled Australia Day with family activities, community barbeques, citizenship ceremonies and award presentations occurring across the region next week.

Acting Mayor John Collins encouraged residents to attend any of the official Australia Day events to be held around the Whitsunday Region on Thursday, 26 January.

Cr Collins said regional celebrations will start at the Collinsville Community Centre at 7.00am with a barbeque breakfast, flag raising ceremony and presentation of awards.

“The Bowen Australia Day celebrations then follow, with a family fun day commencing at the Bowen PCYC at 11.00am and the official ceremony to be held at 12.30pm,” he said

The Great Australian Bites food festival will be returning to Airlie Beach for Australia Day, with a spectacular afternoon of food, wine and live music planned on the foreshore.

Held at shady Fairy Tree Park on the Airlie Beach foreshore, the free family event will be held between 12 noon and 5.00pm in conjunction with the official 2017 Australia Day awards presentation and Citizenship Ceremony scheduled for 3.30pm.

Local restaurants and produce will be featured, with market stalls dishing up a range of tasting plates which focus on the fresh, seasonal flavours of the Whitsundays.

The festival will also feature local artists and musicians, with plenty of Aussie entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

Cr Collins said the festival was a great opportunity to celebrate the best of Australia in one afternoon.

“This is a fantastic free event to get local families enjoying the sunshine and beautiful surrounds of Airlie Beach, while tasting local food and discovering Whitsundays’ artists,” he said.

The 2016 Australia Day Award recipients will be announced at each of the events, with a record number of new Australian citizens to be welcomed at ceremonies across the region.
