Bubs and tots in the Whitsunday Region are benefitting from free early literacy activities as part of the state-wide First 5 Forever program available in Bowen, Cannonvale, Collinsville and Proserpine Libraries.
First 5 Forever encourages parents and carers to talk, sing, play and read more with their young children for the proven and positive impacts these shared family experiences can have on early brain development, and later reading success.
A partnership between the State Library of Queensland, the Queensland Government and 38 Queensland Local Governments, the initiative is largely delivered through local public libraries and Indigenous Knowledge Centres.
Manager of Communities & Libraries Mr Rod Cousins said that he hoped all parents, grandparents and caregivers in the community will come and benefit from the free activities and support available as part of First 5 Forever.
“First 5 Forever is about supporting parents to be their child’s first and most important educator,” Mr Cousins said.
“Children learn best from the important people around them” he said.
“Parents want to do what’s best for their kids, but sometimes it’s difficult to navigate what kids really need when there’s a barrage of competing messages out there.
“There are parents that think you need to spend a lot of money to give children the best start in life, but in fact it’s the simple things – like their time talking, reading and sharing books that’s proven to have the biggest impact.
“That’s why we’re really excited to be part of this grass roots initiative – something that gets back to basics and empowers parents and caregivers to help their children learn when their brains are developing at their fastest.
“We can’t wait to see more families with young ones through our library doors.”
A new video was launched recently to help parents understand the importance of their role.
Programs have commenced this week at the Whitsunday Regional Libraries and include Baby Bounce, Toddler Talk & Storytime. Check with your local branch library for dates and times of available programs.
