Whitsunday Regional Council is on track to develop a Master Plan this year for the revitalisation of the Airlie Beach Foreshore.
Extensive community consultation took place in 2016 on some initial options, which outlined new multipurpose areas, improvements to infrastructure and general beautification of the area near the markets.
As a result of the feedback received during this process, Council has resolved that the Airlie Beach Markets will remain in their current popular location.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said this was only the first step in the planning process.
“We did some initial consultation last year but we are now widening the focus and working on a Master Plan for the entire foreshore area,” he said today.
“The Master Plan will look at the public areas between the Lagoon and Port of Airlie, and will take into account future use of these areas, event spaces, improved facilities and creating a consistent ‘look’ across the whole foreshore area.”
“We will be going out to public consultation soon on the design aspects of the Plan and everyone will be able to have their say on what they’d like to see at the Airlie Beach Foreshore in the future.”
Once the Master Plan has been finalised, Council will begin lobbying the State and Federal Government for future funding to complete the upgrades to the Foreshore.
Council has committed to funding road and parking upgrades near the Whitsunday Sailing Club, including the widening of Coconut Grove and Ocean Road, additional car park spaces and the establishment of a bus turn-around area at the Sailing Club end.
These works are scheduled to take place before mid-2017, and Council will notify the community and affected businesses with further details on these works soon.
Council will be holding an information stall at the Airlie Beach Markets this Saturday 11 February, to answer questions about the Master Plan and receive feedback from the community.
