Whitsunday Regional Council will be holding public displays in shopping centres across the region on Saturday 25 March, to talk to the community about pest management and the proposed Biosecurity Plan.
The draft Biosecurity Plan 2016-2020 aims to be a guide and action plan to combat feral animals and noxious weeds over the next four years.
To speak with Council staff face-to-face about the Plan and pest management, shopping centre displays will be manned across the region on Saturday 25 March, between 9am and 1pm.
Public displays will be held at Whitsunday Plaza in Cannonvale, Freshfields Shopping Centre (Woolworths) in Proserpine, Bowen Centre Point Plaza and Collinsville IGA.
Council’s Manager for Natural Resource Management, Scott Hardy, said the public displays are a great opportunity to learn more about pest species and their impact on our natural environment.
“Not many people realise that in the Whitsunday region alone, there is over 150,000ha of land with declared weeds and over 4000 feral deer,” he said.
“It’s important that we educate residents and landowners about the damage caused by pest species, and explain how we are planning to address these threats.”
“Our pest management officers will be happy to identify any weeds you think may be unsure about, so please bring along any samples you have in a clip sealed bag.”
Public consultation on the draft Plan opened Monday 6 March and will close 5pm, Monday 10 April 2017.
Copies of the draft Plan and survey are also available at Customer Service Centres across the region.
