Ted Cunningham Bridge
Whitsunday Regional Council would like to remind residents at Bowen River to refrain from using the new Ted Cunningham bridge to cross the Bowen River. Public safety is our priority and it is currently not safe for residents to use the bridge in any manner until it can be further assessed.
We understand that a number of residents are isolated due to the recent severe monsoonal rain event and flooding.
Please do not hesitate to contact Council on 1300 972 753 if you require assistance or essential items such as food or medical supplies.
The temporary old bridge is currently under water and closed to traffic. Council is monitoring the river gauge to determine the best time to gain access and will schedule works to reinstate temporary access as soon as flood water recedes.
Regarding the new bridge Council is currently working with the contractor and have engaged an independent engineer to determine the best solution for the future. The potential solutions will be consulted with the community prior to any works taking place.
Update - 23/1
Council crews have assessed the old lower-level Ted Cunningham Bridge and have commenced reinstating the approaches and removal of debris. There is still over 150mm of water in some sections of the bridge but as it is now receding Council will work to have the bridge open for vehicle traffic up to a 10-tonne limit by Friday. Should Council crews complete the work earlier than expected, a further update will be provided.

Update - 21/1
Council’s crews have completed works on the lower-level Ted Cunningham Bridge ahead of schedule and it has now been reopened for light vehicle traffic.
Once the water recedes further works will be completed on the lower-level bridge such as concrete capping and an apron either side.
