Local Government Election 2024

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) is responsible for conducting local government elections across Queensland.

Elections for Whitsunday Regional Council will be held on 16 March 2024.

Whitsunday Regional Council Councillors are elected for a four-year term. The elected members consist of a Mayor and six Councillors, with each Councillor representing a geographical division.

Mandatory Training – So you want to be a Councillor?

Candidates must complete mandatory governance training no more than six months before nominating for any election or by-election, even if you have completed the training before. The link to complete the training and other information for candidates is available on the Queensland Government's website.

An information session will be held at the IBIS Hotel in Mackay on Tuesday 16 January 2024 from 6pm – 8pm for candidates who are interested in what is involved in becoming a local Councillor.

Please note that candidates must abide by our Guidelines for Political Advertisements as per the Local Government Act 2009 and the Whitsunday Regional Council Local Law No. 1 (Administration) 2014.

 

Do I need to vote?

Voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the age of 18. If you don’t vote, you may receive a fine.

The Queensland electoral roll is maintained by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC).
