Waste Management Facility Charge
As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable waste management, Whitsunday Regional Council has introduced a new Waste Management Facility Charge. This charge will appear on the rates notices issued across the region and is a crucial step in ensuring that we can continue to manage our waste facilities efficiently and effectively, which requires significant resources.
Over the next three years, we plan to invest over $20.3 million in the waste network:
- Regional Projects: $75k
- Legacy Waste Sites: $700k
- Transfer Stations: $2.2M
- Kelsey Creek Landfill: $10.4M
- Bowen Landfill: $6.9M
Understanding the Charge
The charge is structured into three tiers, depending on the type of property:
- Households outside the declared service area per assessment (properties without collection): $276.00
- Households within the declared service area per assessment (properties with collection): $216.00
- Non-Residential/Other per assessment (eg. commercial, vacant land): $160.00
The amount charged annually will vary based on these categories, reflecting the different levels of service and infrastructure required.
While there is a new charge, it is partially offset by a reduction in domestic garbage and recycling charges for properties with collection services. This balanced approach helps to minimise the overall impact on ratepayers while ensuring we can sustainably manage waste for the future.
The introduction of this charge is part of a broader strategy to manage waste sustainably and responsibly. By investing in our waste management infrastructure, we are taking important steps towards a more sustainable Whitsunday region.
