Australia Day, Our Whitsunday Way 2025
Whitsunday Regional Council has honoured the region’s community champions with a special Australia Day Awards ceremony held at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre today.
Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Ry Collins said the awards are a special opportunity to celebrate the incredible individuals and groups who make the Whitsundays such a vibrant and connected community.
“Today’s award winners and nominees are our community’s unsung heroes—people who go above and beyond to make a real difference,” he said.
“These awards are about recognising the extraordinary contributions that help shape our region, from inspiring leaders to those who quietly work behind the scenes to support others.
“Honouring these remarkable individuals is a powerful reminder of the importance of community spirit and the role it plays in making the Whitsundays a wonderful place to live.
“It’s not just about celebrating achievements; it’s about acknowledging the values and dedication that bring us together as a community” Mayor Collins said.

Citizen of the Year Award – Matt Stokes (Sponsor: Whitsunday Chamber of Commerce)
Over the past decade, Matt has shown unwavering dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of others. His involvement with Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network has been particularly inspiring.
Through his leadership and commitment, he has helped to break down stigmas surrounding mental health and champion open conversations about suicide prevention. His efforts have supported numerous events and fundraisers, including the impactful “Legends Night,” which raised over $20,000 for vital community programs.
Matt’s passion for community well-being extends even further. He has mentored young people, supported local outreach initiatives and participated in programs that foster connection and resilience.
Whether by lending a hand to those in need or offering his expertise to empower others, Matt’s generosity and kindness have touched countless lives.
His philanthropic spirit is evident in everything he does. Matt continually prioritises giving back, whether by volunteering his time, supporting mental health initiatives, or championing causes that strengthen the fabric of the Whitsundays community. His compassion and integrity are a beacon of hope, inspiring all who know him to build a more connected and caring society.

Young Citizen of the Year – Cooper Groocock (Sponsor: McDonalds Whitsunday outlets)
As the 2024 School President, Cooper has gone above and beyond to support and uplift those around him. He has led initiatives such as Spirit Week and fundraisers, fostering teamwork and enthusiasm among his peers.
Cooper’s outstanding school achievements further demonstrate his dedication and versatility. He has been awarded the prestigious Year 12 Dux and Australian Defence Forces Long Tan and Future Innovators Awards, recognising his academic excellence, leadership and teamwork in STEM.
As a talented athlete, he has broken school swimming records, earned Gold Citizenship and Cultural Awards, and represented the school in squash and swimming at state levels. Cooper was also named Sportsman of the Year and Champion of Champions for his remarkable inter-house sporting accomplishments.
Beyond school, Cooper’s community work has been extraordinary. A proud member of the Collinsville community, he has raised vital funds for causes close to his heart, including cancer treatment for Rilee Mackie and Beyond Blue. Cooper also played a key role in organising local events such as the May Day float, further demonstrating his passion for bringing people together and giving back to his hometown.
Cooper’s efforts are a shining example of the difference one individual can make through leadership, compassion and determination. His dedication to serving others inspires everyone around him, proving that even at a young age, remarkable impact is possible.
Mayoral Awards – Dr Arthur Trezise, Brittaney O’Brien and Susan Gravelle
It is an honour to celebrate the incredible contributions of Dr. Arthur Trezise, a true pillar of the Bowen community. For over 40 years, Dr. Trezise has dedicated his life to providing exceptional medical care, touching the lives of countless residents.
As the long-time owner of Queens Beach Medical Centre, Dr. Trezise expanded his practice to meet the region’s growing needs, employing numerous doctors and ensuring the highest standard of care. Beyond running a busy, fully accredited clinic, he supported the local hospital as an on-call doctor for many years and played a vital role in mentoring medical students, registrars and future general practitioners.
Dr. Trezise’s compassion and commitment have spanned generations, with some families benefiting from his care for decades—even delivering babies during the time the local hospital didn’t have a birthing suite! Despite challenges such as doctor shortages, accreditation demands and the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic, his unwavering dedication to his patients and community never faltered.
Dr. Trezise’s exceptional service, mentorship and devotion to his profession have earned him profound respect and admiration. He exemplifies the very best of community service and we are proud to honour him today. Please join me in a round of applause for Dr. Arthur Trezise!
Now, let us celebrate the incredible achievements of Brittaney O'Brien, a true trailblazer in the world of motorcycle racing.
As the reigning Australian Women’s Track Champion and Australian Women’s Dirt Track Champion, Brittaney has also claimed the Queensland titles in both classes—a testament to her unparalleled skill, dedication and determination.
In a sport traditionally dominated by men, Brittaney is an empowering role model for young women, showing that excellence knows no boundaries. Her fellow riders admire her not only for her talent but also for her unwavering support, exceptional sportsmanship, and genuine celebration of others’ achievements.
Brittaney’s inspiring journey proves that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.
It is an honour to recognise Sue Gravelle, a cornerstone of the Whitsunday community for over 40 years. Sue’s unwavering dedication and tireless volunteer work have touched countless lives and made a profound impact on our region.
As a committed member of the Whitsunday Lions Club for 15 years, Sue has taken on vital roles, from Treasurer to Club Bulletin Editor and has coordinated beloved programs like “Adopt a Christmas Family” and the Peace Poster Competition. Her contributions extend further, volunteering at local markets for over two decades, assisting with Youth of the Year and annual fundraisers, and serving on committees supporting youth, seniors and health causes.
Sue’s incredible ability to identify community needs and inspire action makes her an invaluable volunteer.
Volunteer of the Year – Natasha O’Neil (Sponsor: Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon)
It is with great admiration that we recognise Natasha for her tireless efforts in establishing and sustaining a vital support group for cancer and ostomy patients in Bowen.
Natasha’s dedication has been a lifeline for individuals seeking support, resources and guidance in navigating the challenges of living with an ostomy bag. Under her leadership, the group has grown into a monthly gathering where members share experiences, discuss challenges and provide one another with invaluable support.
She goes above and beyond by organising trips to Mackay and Townsville for medical appointments, securing donations and coordinating guest speakers, breast care nurses and ostomy specialists. Natasha also hosts special events, such as Christmas gatherings and extends her support to nearby communities.
Balancing her responsibilities as a local high school counsellor and a busy family life, Natasha’s efforts are nothing short of extraordinary. Her unwavering commitment has created a space of hope and connection for many in need and without her, this group would not exist.
Community Group Award – Whitsunday Brahmans (Sponsor: Bendigo Bank Cannonvale/Proserpine)
We are delighted to celebrate The Whitsunday Brahmans for their incredible contribution to our community through their inaugural "Family Field Day" in 2024 at Les Stagg Oval.
Organised by a dedicated group of volunteers, this event was a heartfelt way for the Brahmans to give back to the community that supports Proserpine Rugby League. The day was packed with family-friendly activities like relay races, tug of war, biscuit face and football, creating memorable connections between Brahmans players and local children.
With food vans, market stalls, jumping castles and wildlife activities, the event truly offered something for everyone. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Brahmans demonstrated their commitment to fostering community ties beyond the football field, making the "Family Field Day" a resounding success.
Senior Sportsperson Award – Michael Kimpton (Sponsor: Tassal)
Michael Kimpton, a 70-year-old retired triathlete and an extraordinary leader in the Whitsundays sports community.
Michael began his triathlon journey at 64, transforming his retirement into an inspiring chapter of athletic achievement. He has competed in prestigious events worldwide, including the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii and the World Multisport Championships in Townsville. Despite recovering from a life-changing motorcycle accident in 1977, Michael has proven that resilience and determination know no limits.
As President of the Whitsunday Triathlon Club and Race Director of the Airlie Beach Triathlon Festival, Michael has been instrumental in preserving and revitalising this iconic event. When the festival faced a critical crisis in 2022, Michael stepped up to lead a volunteer committee, securing sponsorships and ensuring its continued success. His efforts have kept the event’s 24-year legacy alive and thriving.
Michael’s dedication, resilience and leadership have not only advanced his personal achievements but also inspired his community and strengthened the spirit of sports in the Whitsundays.
Young Sportsperson Award – Jure Portelli (Sponsor: Coral Sea Marina Resort Airlie Beach Triathlon)
A Year 10 student at St. Catherine’s Catholic College, Jure has quickly made her mark on the racing world with talent, dedication and a drive to succeed.
In 2024, Jure built on her impressive 2023 accomplishments, including selection for the prestigious Ferrari Driving Academy’s Rising Star Program. Competing in events across Queensland and South Australia, she secured first place in a 16-hour endurance race, second in a 20-hour race and multiple top finishes in rally and hill climb events. She also leads the local go-kart club championship for the fourth year running.
Beyond the track, Jure actively gives back to the community, supporting local charities through car shows and festivals. As a brand ambassador for prominent companies like Pit Viper, Gant Racewear and Penrite Oils, she proudly represents her local sponsors, including Solar Power Whitsundays and Whitsunday Chiropractic.
Jure’s achievements, combined with her determination to become a professional race car driver, make her an inspiring role model and a deserving nominee for the Junior Sports Award.
Environmental Achievement Award – Eco Barge Clean Seas (Sponsor: Green Energy Technologies)
We proudly acknowledge the incredible impact of Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc., a not-for-profit environmental organisation based in Airlie Beach that has been a champion for marine life and the aquatic environment in the Whitsunday region since 2009.
Over the past 15 years, Eco Barge has removed an astounding 256,784 kilograms of marine debris from our beaches and waterways. Their remarkable efforts extend beyond cleanup initiatives, including educating the community through the Clean Streets and Creeks Program, recycling ocean plastics into reusable products and caring for sick and injured marine turtles at the Whitsunday Turtle Rescue Centre.
With the dedication of a passionate committee, 55 members and over 2,000 volunteers, Eco Barge inspires community action and fosters a greater awareness of the importance of protecting our marine environment.
Arts & Cultural Award – Seagrass Theatre and Music Company (Sponsor: Creative Connections Whitsunday)
Established just three years ago by a passionate group of students, Seagrass Theatre has grown into an inclusive platform for young people to explore and showcase their talents in acting, music and technical production. This year, their dedication and creativity culminated in a highly successful production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
The project, which spanned five months, saw students take on a wide variety of specialist roles, from directing and performing to managing technical production, with guidance from professional mentors when needed.
Under the musical direction of Idris Harries, the production came to life across six spectacular performances that drew an audience of over 1,000 people.
Through teamwork, creativity and exceptional problem-solving, these students demonstrated not only their artistic talent but also their ability to work collaboratively toward a shared vision.
Their success is a testament to their dedication, passion and the power of youth-led initiatives to enrich our cultural community.
