$15M in road recovery awarded recently to Whitsunday locals

Whitsunday Regional Council has awarded more than $15 million in road repair contracts to local Whitsunday businesses over the last month, as part of the jointly funded Australian and Queensland Governments Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Repairs to Council roads and culvert drains have been underway since early last year after heavy rainfall and flooding during the monsoon seasons in early 2019 and early 2020.

More than $4 million in road repair contracts were awarded at this week’s Ordinary Council Meeting and will see repair and rehabilitation works on the rural road network in the Bowen area.

Mayor Andrew Willcox said it was critical to get the final stage of monsoon repairs underway before the next wet season.

“We have been approved for approximately $46 million in DRFA funding over the past year to fix our sealed and unsealed roads which were damaged in the monsoon events,” he said.

“What I am most proud of is that Council has been able to award 98 per cent of these works to local businesses from within the Whitsunday region.”

“The generous support we receive from the Australian and Queensland Governments under the DRFA has allowed us to repair our critical rural road network, keeping our residents connected.”

All road repairs from the 2019 and 2020 monsoon events are expected to be completed by mid 2021, weather permitting.
